KABUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — Afghanistan marked the 106th anniversary of its independence from British colonial rule on Tuesday with official ceremonies and a public holiday.

In an official statement, the Afghan interim government said: “One hundred and six years ago, with divine help and through determined struggle, the proud Muslim people of Afghanistan forced the British Empire to recognize the country’s full independence, returning control of foreign policy to the Afghan people.”

The statement also highlighted subsequent victories over the Soviet Union and American occupation, which officials said demonstrated Afghanistan's unbroken spirit of resistance.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs declared a day off, and the Ministry of National Defence organised a special ceremony.

Afghan officials gave speeches stressing that the day was a symbol of national pride and resilience. –0–
