WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with seven European leaders, held multilateral talks at the White House on Monday, focusing on resolving the Ukraine conflict.

D. Trump first held a bilateral meeting with V. Zelensky.

Answering questions from reporters alongside the Ukrainian leader, Trump said he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted the war to end and would work with Ukraine and all sides to achieve peace.

D. Trump stated that progress has been made in resolving the Ukrainian conflict and that the security guarantees requested by Ukraine will be provided.

V. Zelensky stated that he supports the idea of ending the war through diplomatic means and is ready for a trilateral meeting.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron took part in the talks that followed the bilateral meeting between D. Trump and V. Zelensky.

Speaking to reporters, D. Trump said that V. Putin agreed to consider the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine, and that V. Putin is striving to find a solution.

V. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine would welcome D. Trump’s participation in a possible trilateral meeting with him and V. Putin.

The Ukrainian leader said that the trilateral meeting would discuss sensitive issues, including the territorial question.

D. Trump said that such a trilateral meeting should take place “as soon as possible.”

European leaders have backed the ceasefire, saying progress is possible on security guarantees for Ukraine.

“I cannot imagine that the next meeting will take place without a ceasefire,” said F. Merz.

E. Macron put forward the idea of a four-party meeting with the participation of the European side, stating that “when we talk about security guarantees, we are talking about the security of the entire European continent.”

According to media reports, D. Trump interrupted negotiations with European leaders to call V. Putin.

"After the meetings, I called President V. Putin and began preparations for a meeting between President V. Putin and President V. Zelensky, the location of which is yet to be determined. After that meeting takes place, we will have trilateral talks in which both Presidents and I will participate," D. Trump wrote on his page on the Truth Social social network.

The talks held on Monday were preceded by a nearly three-hour meeting between D. Trump and V. Putin, which took place on August 15 in the American state of Alaska. No agreement was reached following the meeting on Friday. –0–
