"Photographing veterans is a race against time"
Qi Hui, 55, is an employee of China Unicom's Tangshan branch in Hebei Province. He is also a photography enthusiast. In his spare time, he searches for veterans of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and takes portraits for them. He initiated a charity photo project to support veterans of the 8th Army in Jidong (now including Qinhuangdao, Tangshan and Cangzhou), creating the Tangshan Volunteer Photo Group of 40 people.
Over 11 years, the team took photo portraits of veterans, recorded their war stories, and provided domestic assistance, traveling through 27 counties, towns, and districts in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Liaoning, covering over 70,000 km.
To date, they have found 215 veterans, taken more than 100,000 photographs for them, recorded over 600,000 characters of memories, published a special photo album, “Eternal Memory: Heroes of the 8th Army in Jidong,” and organized photo exhibitions, “Memories That Never Fade,” in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei.
