WASHINGTON, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, along with seven European leaders, held multilateral talks at the White House on Monday.

The talks, which followed a bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelensky earlier in the day, were attended by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Speaking to reporters, D. Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to consider the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine, calling it one of the key points that “need to be taken into account.” The American leader added that V. Putin was seeking to find a solution.

V. Zelensky stressed the importance of a strong security signal from the United States, stating that Ukraine would welcome D. Trump's participation in a possible trilateral meeting.

D. Trump said that such a trilateral meeting should take place “as soon as possible.”

European leaders have backed the ceasefire, saying progress is possible on security guarantees for Ukraine.

The talks held on Monday were preceded by a nearly three-hour meeting between D. Trump and V. Putin, which took place on August 15 in the American state of Alaska. –0–
