BRUSSELS, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday announced that she, other European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington on Aug. 18 for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“At the request of President V. Zelensky, I will take part in a meeting with President D. Trump and other European leaders tomorrow at the White House,” U. von der Leyen wrote on the social network X.
The German government announced on Sunday that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Washington on August 18, where he will join other European leaders and Zelensky for talks with Donald Trump.
The German government statement noted that F. Merz is expected to discuss the current state of peace efforts. In addition, security guarantees, territorial issues and further support for Ukraine will also be discussed.
The French presidential office told media on Sunday that Emmanuel Macron would travel to Washington on August 18 along with Zelensky and other European leaders to strengthen coordination between Europe and the United States.
Italian news agency ANSA reported that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will arrive in Washington on August 18 to attend a meeting with D. Trump at the White House, along with V. Zelensky and other European heads of state.
