HOHHOT, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a flash flood that hit a campsite in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Saturday night has risen to nine, with three others still missing, local authorities said Sunday.
According to the Bayan Nur city emergency management agency, the natural disaster occurred at around 10 pm on Saturday in the upper reaches of the river in the Urad-Khoutsi khoshun area, as a result of which contact was lost with 13 tourists who had set up camp in the wild.
As of 3:30 p.m. Sunday, one person had been rescued, nine people were confirmed dead and three were still missing.
More than 700 rescuers were promptly dispatched to the scene to carry out emergency search and rescue operations.
China's Ministry of Emergency Management has launched rescue efforts, calling for all-out efforts to search for missing people and dispatching a task force to lead the effort. The ministry has warned travelers to avoid undeveloped natural areas during the flood season and exercise caution when traveling in geologically dangerous areas. -0-
