ISLAMABAD, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) — A total of 307 people were killed and dozens injured in rain-related accidents in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the past 48 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Saturday.
About 90.6 percent of the deaths were due to flash floods and 6.4 percent were due to roof collapse, the NDMA said in a statement.
Heavy rains, flash floods and lightning strikes have caused severe damage in 11 districts across the province, leaving some people missing and causing widespread destruction, according to rescue agencies.
Widespread damage was reported, with dozens of people trapped under rubble and many swept away by floods. Rescue teams are working to recover victims and bodies from the rubble and the situation in the area remains dire, Bilal Faizi, spokesman for the state-run 1122 KP Rescue Service, told Xinhua.
According to the NDMA, 634 people have been killed and 768 injured in rain-related accidents in Pakistan since the start of the monsoon season on June 26.
The NDMA said the worst-hit region was Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where 378 people died, followed by Punjab in the east, where 164 people died. Sindh province in the south and Gilgit-Baltistan in the north reported 28 and 24 deaths respectively, while the remaining 40 fatalities were reported in other provinces and Islamabad. –0–
