TBILISI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — The Surami bypass road, the second section of the Zemo Osiauri-Chumateleti highway, part of the E60 highway connecting the east and west of the country, opened to traffic in Georgia on Saturday. The project is part of an international transport network that plays an important role in strengthening ties between Europe and Asia.

This was announced on Saturday by Xiang Jinsheng, deputy general manager of the International Company of the 16th Engineering Bureau SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited and the project manager. According to him, the official opening of traffic took place at 9:30 a.m. local time.

The contract for the construction of this section was signed in December 2020 between SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited and the Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Georgia. The project was financed with the support of the World Bank in the amount of $95.2 million. The works commenced on March 1, 2021 and were carried out by the 16th engineering bureau of SINOHYDRO Corporation Limited.

Speaking at the opening ceremony the day before, on August 15, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze emphasized the strategic importance of the project. “This project is another step towards achieving our strategic goal – to make Georgia the central, fastest and safest link of the Middle Corridor connecting Europe and Asia,” the head of government said.

“Since the beginning of our government’s work, more than 298 kilometers of highways have been built. For comparison: up to 2012, a total of 68 kilometers were built,” added I. Kobakhidze.

Thanks to the professional approach of the Chinese side, the construction was completed in full compliance with international quality and safety standards. –0–
