LONDON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Britain held a series of events on Friday to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan, including a national ceremony attended by King Charles III and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The event, which took place at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, saw two minutes of silence observed across the country. The Red Arrows, an aerobatic team from the Royal Air Force, flew over the arboretum at midday.

"We also remember the prisoners of war who endured years of cruel imprisonment: hunger, disease and cruelty that tested the limits of human endurance. The civilian population in the occupied territories also faced terrible hardships," Charles III said in an audio message released Friday morning.

Hundreds of buildings and sites will be illuminated from 9pm on Friday to mark the day, including Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, Parliament, the Tower of London and the White Cliffs of Dover, the British government said.

As Sky News reported on Friday, many believe that V-J Day has long been overlooked in comparison to VE Day, and that the sacrifices of those soldiers who continued to fight for three months have been undervalued.

This year also marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. In the main eastern theater of the global fight against fascism, the Chinese resistance efforts played a decisive role in defeating Japanese militarism and supported other fronts in Europe and Asia. –0–
