WELLINGTON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — People in New Zealand's South Island on Friday marked the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The event also paid tribute to Rewi Alley, who lived and worked in China for 60 years, contributing to the Chinese people's war resistance, the country's post-war economic development and the strengthening of China-New Zealand friendship.
The ceremony took place at the Rewi Alley Memorial Park in Springfield, his birthplace. The event attracted about 150 participants, including local officials, members of the New Zealand-China Friendship Society (NZCF), relatives of R. Alley, as well as representatives of the Chinese community and Chinese companies.
Consul General of China in Christchurch He Ying said the anniversary was an occasion to honour overseas friends like R. Alley, who made important contributions to the Chinese people's victory over the Japanese invaders. "These bright names and deeds represent the deep, blood-forged friendship between China and New Zealand during the anti-fascist period," she said.
“I have no doubt that the foundation of our relationship with China was very much based on the work that Rewi Alley began in China about 100 years ago. That should never be forgotten,” said former New Zealand Parliament Speaker and patron of the NZNC David Carter. –0–
