ANCHORAGE, U.S., Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he had a "very productive meeting" with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, but the summit ended without reaching an agreement on the Ukraine crisis.

Following the talks at Elmendorf-Richardson Air Force Base, the presidents held a joint press conference that lasted just over 10 minutes.

D. Trump said "many points" had been agreed upon, adding that the sides had made some progress, although no deal had been reached.

V. Putin said that he agreed that Ukraine's security must be ensured. "I would like to hope that the understanding we have reached will allow us to get closer to that goal and open the way to peace," he added.

Both leaders noted that progress had been made in the talks, but there was no concrete deal.

V. Putin stated that the negotiations took place “in a constructive and mutually respectful atmosphere,” and that a personal meeting between the heads of the two states was “really overdue.”

“Everything that is happening is a tragedy and great pain for us,” said V. Putin, adding that Russia is sincerely interested in putting an end to this.

He stressed that efforts should be aimed at eliminating the root causes of the conflict. “We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive all this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles,” the president added.

“I expect that today’s agreements will become a reference point not only for resolving the Ukrainian problem, but will also mark the beginning of the restoration of businesslike pragmatic relations between Russia and the United States,” said V. Putin.

He noted that Russian-American cooperation in the field of investment and business has enormous potential: the countries have a lot to offer each other in trade, the digital sphere, high technology and space exploration.

“Interaction in the Arctic and the resumption of interregional contacts also seem relevant,” the Russian leader said.

D. Trump described the talks as “extremely productive” and said “great progress” had been made.

“Many points” were agreed upon, the American leader noted, adding that there is “a very good chance of achieving a result.”

The White House chief said he would soon call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders.

The head of Ukraine on Friday expressed hope that the meeting between D. Trump and V. Putin will pave the way for trilateral negotiations.

The meeting lasted about three hours and was the first personal meeting between the presidents of the two countries since 2021.

At the press conference, D. Trump and V. Putin did not answer journalists’ questions. –0–
