TOKYO, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday sent a ritual offering to the notorious Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender in World War II, a symbol of the country's brutal militaristic past.
The temple, located in central Tokyo, was visited on Friday by Japan's Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, former economic security ministers Sanae Takaichi and Takayuki Kobayashi, and influential ruling Liberal Democratic Party member Koichi Hagiuda.
In the afternoon, people carrying posters reading “Against Yasukuni Shrine” and “Against War” and chanting slogans marched through the streets of Tokyo.
The protesters demanded that the Japanese government acknowledge and take responsibility for the military aggression, and strongly opposed the visit of cabinet and parliament members to the temple.
A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Japan said the Yasukuni Shrine is a spiritual instrument and symbol of the Japanese militarists responsible for the war of aggression and commemorates the names of 14 convicted Class A war criminals from World War II.
The spokesman said that the core of the Yasukuni Shrine issue is whether the Japanese side can correctly understand and deeply reflect on its history of aggression, adhere to the statements and commitments it has made on historical issues, and abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and adhere to the path of peaceful development. According to the Chinese representative, this is a fundamental issue that concerns aggression and anti-aggression, justice and evil, light and darkness.
China calls on Japan to frankly acknowledge and reflect on its history of aggression, sincerely fulfill its promises and commitments on issues such as the Yasukuni Shrine, completely abandon militarism, adhere to the path of peaceful development, and earn the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community with concrete actions, the spokesman said. -0-
