BOGOTA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Colombian senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay died at 01:56 local time (06:56 GMT) on Monday, two months after he was wounded in a shooting at a political rally in June.

“The medical team responsible for Mr. U. Turbay’s care in all areas of our institution worked tirelessly for more than two months since he was admitted with serious injuries,” the Santa Fe Foundation hospital in the capital, Bogota, said in a statement.

“Despite all efforts, the outcome was tragic, and we therefore express our solidarity with the entire family of U. Turbay at this moment of deep sorrow,” the hospital’s statement added.

"This act of violence is a blow not only to the senator… but also to democracy, freedom of thought and the legitimate exercise of political activity in Colombia," the country's government said after the attack.

According to local media, 39-year-old U. Turbay was shot in the afternoon of June 7 in Bogota and was taken to a hospital where he underwent several surgeries.

Police confirmed that U. Turbay was attending a political rally in the capital at the time of the attack. Witnesses told local media that an unidentified man got off a motorcycle and shot the Colombian senator several times from close range. –0–
