UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong on Sunday expressed grave concern over Israel's plan to seize Gaza City, saying any attempt to seize part of Palestinian territory must be resolutely stopped.

The Israeli security cabinet's approval of the plan to seize Gaza City is "a matter of grave concern," Fu Tsung said at a rare emergency meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian issue held by the UN Security Council over the weekend, calling on Israel to "immediately stop this dangerous action."

At this meeting, Israel's plan to seize Gaza City drew widespread protest and condemnation from the majority of Security Council members.

"Gaza belongs to the Palestinian people. It is an integral part of the Palestinian territory. Any action aimed at changing the demographic and territorial structure must be met with extreme rejection and resistance," the Chinese diplomat stressed.

According to him, military means are not the way to resolve the protracted conflict, and an immediate ceasefire is the only correct way to save lives and ensure the release of hostages. He called on the Israeli government to heed the calls of the international community and its own people, to immediately stop the escalation of tensions, as well as military operations in Gaza.

“Countries that have significant influence on the parties to the conflict must take a fair and responsible position and take concrete steps to facilitate the achievement of a ceasefire,” he added.

Fu Cong also called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law as an occupying power: open all border crossings, lift restrictions on humanitarian access, allow large-scale, rapid and safe delivery of humanitarian supplies to Gaza, and support the UN in its delivery of aid in accordance with humanitarian principles.

The Chinese representative called the implementation of the “two states for two peoples” principle “the only viable way to resolve the Palestinian issue and achieve peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel.” He called on the international community to “redouble efforts to advance the political process of realizing the “two states for two peoples” principle and jointly oppose any unilateral steps that undermine its foundation.”

China is willing to work side by side with the world to help end the war in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian disaster and realize the principle of "two states for two peoples" to finally achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, Fu Cong concluded. –0–
