CHONGQING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) — Heavy rains have forced the evacuation of more than 15,000 residents in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, local authorities said Monday.
Heavy rainfall hit 16 districts and counties in Chongqing from 7:00 a.m. Sunday to 7:00 a.m. Monday, according to the city's meteorological bureau. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Hechuan District, where the amount reached 167 mm.
More than 15,000 people had been evacuated in Chongqing as of 6 a.m. Monday, the city's emergency management department said.
The Chongqing Meteorological Station and the Chongqing City Key Hydrological Monitoring Station have forecast heavy and torrential rainfall in several areas of Chongqing from Monday morning to evening, including the city's central area, the central and southeastern parts, and the southern parts of the northeastern part of the city.
From 08:00 Monday to 08:00 Wednesday, water levels in most small and medium-sized rivers in Chongqing are expected to rise to varying degrees. -0-
