JERUSALEM, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday he is determined to move forward with a newly approved plan to take control of Gaza City, a plan that has drawn international condemnation.

Israel “has no choice but to finish what it started and completely defeat the Palestinian Hamas movement,” B. Netanyahu said at a press conference for foreign media in Jerusalem.

“Our goal is not to occupy Gaza, but to liberate it,” the Israeli Prime Minister emphasized.

B. Netanyahu noted that even if Hamas is “completely defeated,” Israel’s post-war plan envisages maintaining control over security in the Palestinian enclave and full control over the territory between Gaza and Israel, where a “buffer zone” will be created.

He said daily life in Gaza would be governed by a "civil administration" under the auspices of an international entity that is neither Israel nor the internationally recognized Palestinian Authority.

Netanyahu also denounced what he called a “global campaign of lies” as condemnation of the plan grew both internationally and within Israel. He rejected claims that the Jewish state was deliberately starving Palestinians, despite evidence in the form of photographs, videos, testimonies from local journalists, international medical experts who visited Gaza, UN experts and human rights groups.

At least five more people died of starvation and exhaustion on Sunday in Gaza, health officials said, bringing the death toll from Israeli airstrikes since Oct. 7, 2023, to at least 61,430. –0–
