TEHRAN, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) — Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Thursday appointed his new representatives to the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) and the newly established National Defense Council.
According to statements published on the Supreme Leader’s website, by separate decrees, A. Khamenei appointed former secretaries of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Akbar Ahmadian and Ali Shamkhani as his representatives in the National Defense Council, and the current secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani as his representative in this body.
On August 5, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian appointed Supreme Leader's Senior Advisor and former Parliament Speaker A. Larijani as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. A. Larijani replaced A. Ahmadian, who held the post since May 2023.
A. Shamkhani was the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 2013 to 2023.
On August 3, the Supreme National Security Council approved the creation of a national defense council, which will centrally review the country's defense plans and issues of increasing the potential of the Iranian armed forces.
The council is headed by the president and includes the heads of Iran's three branches of government, namely the executive, judicial and legislative branches, as well as the commanders of the armed forces and individual ministers. –0–
