TEHRAN, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref on Tuesday accused the United States of supporting Israeli "aggression" against Iran despite no evidence that Iran's nuclear program is not peaceful.
During a conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of a UN conference in Turkmenistan, M.R. Aref said Iran was complying with international rules and agreed to the ceasefire announced on June 24 solely for humanitarian reasons after 12 days of armed confrontation.
Iran's vice president has warned that repeated acts of aggression could destabilize West Asia. He criticized the UN's inaction, saying "more adequate action" could have prevented the current crisis in Gaza.
M.R. Aref described the situation in the Palestinian enclave as “barbaric,” calling on the UN to restrain Israel.
A. Guterres, for his part, called the US and Israeli strikes on Iran illegal, emphasized the priority of diplomacy for resolving the issue of the Iranian nuclear program, and noted the importance of respecting the rights of the Palestinians.
The Iran-Israel conflict began on June 13, when Israel attacked Iran's nuclear and military facilities. Then, on June 22, the United States bombed Iranian facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. Iran launched retaliatory attacks against both Israel and the United States, leading to a ceasefire agreement on June 24. –0–
