GUANGZHOU, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Heavy rains, some particularly heavy, hit large parts of southern China's Guangdong Province from Monday to early Tuesday.
In response, the provincial flood, drought and wind control headquarters upgraded the flood emergency response from level four to level three at 18:00 on Monday. The Guangdong Provincial Water Resources Administration also upgraded the flood response from level three to level two at 08:00 on Tuesday.
By 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, 16 cities and 104 counties and districts in Guangdong Province had been placed on flood alert.
As it became known in the Guangdong Provincial Water Resources Administration, during the period from 08:00 on August 2 to 10:00 on August 5, due to heavy rains, the water level on 16 local rivers has already exceeded the dangerous mark. In the next two days, the water level in some rivers in Guangdong Province will rise by 2-6 meters, at a number of hydrographic monitoring points there is a high probability of exceeding the dangerous mark.
The above-mentioned department has already declared 93 alerts in connection with mountain streams, and 78 emergency rescue teams have been preliminarily created to combat the water element.
According to the forecast of the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Center, heavy rains are expected in most parts of Guangdong Province from August 5 to 6, with particularly heavy downpours in some places. From August 7 to 8, precipitation will cease in the province and cloudy weather will prevail with a gradual increase in air temperature.
The Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Center called on local governments and the public to remain vigilant against possible geological disasters such as mudflows and landslides, as well as secondary disasters such as flooding of populated areas, mountain torrents, and river floods.
