BEIRUT, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — Hundreds of people, including family members of the victims and wounded in the 2020 Beirut port explosion, gathered at Martyrs' Square here on Monday and marched towards the port to pay tribute to the victims.
The demonstrators, joined by activists and government officials, carried photographs of the victims and banners demanding the truth and accountability for the incident. The explosion, which occurred at the port on August 4, 2020, killed 200 people, injured around 7,000 and severely disrupted port operations.
“Today, five years after this tragedy, we stand before the souls of the martyrs, before the victims and their families, before all Lebanese, to affirm that justice will not die and that accountability will inevitably be borne,” said Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. “The Lebanese state, with all its institutions, is committed to establishing the truth, despite the obstacles and no matter how high the positions in question. Justice knows no exceptions, and the law applies to everyone without exception.” –0–
