SAO PAULO, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Brazil strongly opposes economic sanctions imposed because of its trade relations with other countries, a presidential adviser said Saturday.
“We are against economic sanctions in any case, except those authorized by the UN Security Council,” said Celso Amorim, special adviser to the Brazilian president, in response to the US demand to stop importing oil from Russia.
U.S. lawmakers who met with Brazilian lawmakers earlier this week called on Brazil to reduce or even stop importing Russian oil as part of talks to cut tariffs on Brazilian exports by 50 percent.
S. Amorim said Brazil will not accept US conditions on its energy policy to reach a tariff agreement and is against the use of economic influence for geopolitical purposes. –0–
