MEXICO CITY, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — At least seven inmates were killed and 11 were injured in riots that broke out at a prison in the city of Tuxpan in Mexico's eastern Veracruz state on Saturday afternoon, the state's Public Security Ministry said on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, following the riots, National Guard troops, along with members of the Ministry of National Defense and the Secretariat of Public Security of the state, regained control of the Social Reintegration Center, the secretariat reported on social networks.

“As a result of the riots, according to available information, seven prisoners were killed, another 11 people were injured and are undergoing treatment in various hospitals,” the statement said.

The secretariat reported that several fires caused by the riots in the prison had been completely extinguished and a number of inmates had been transferred to a prison in the city of Panuco.

The Veracruz State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to good governance and improving security conditions in prisons in coordination with other government agencies. –0–
