ALMATY, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres attended a signing ceremony of an agreement between the Kazakh government and the United Nations to establish a UN regional center for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan, a statement to that effect was published on the Kazakh president's official website on Sunday.
K.-Zh. Tokayev noted that today's event is of great importance both for Kazakhstan and the UN. The signed agreement officially confirms the creation of a regional center for SDGs and marks an important stage in the long-term and fruitful cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN.
“The powers and functions of this center will not overlap with the activities of other organizations either within the region or beyond. On the contrary, the center will complement the efforts already being undertaken, bringing additional value by focusing on the real needs of the residents of the entire region. Such problems of Central Asia as the environmental degradation of the Aral Sea and the shrinking area of the Caspian Sea have become notorious. To effectively address them, it is necessary to strengthen regional cooperation and increase the involvement of the UN,” emphasized K.-Zh. Tokayev.
In turn, A. Guterres stated that the opening of the center means the beginning of a new chapter for the region on the path to achieving sustainable development goals.
“The opening of the centre symbolises a new era of cooperation in Central Asia, based on shared priorities and joint solutions. The centre has great potential to demonstrate how strong ties between the region’s leaders can lead to deeper economic integration,” the UN Secretary-General said.
Kazakhstan will reportedly host a regional environmental summit in Astana in April 2026 in partnership with UN agencies. –0–
