Aden, Yemen, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) — More than 20 migrants were killed and dozens more are missing after a boat carrying 150 Africans sank off the coast of Abyan province in the Arabian Sea in southern Yemen, Yemeni sources said Sunday.
A local official, who asked to remain anonymous, told Xinhua that the boat capsized late on Saturday at around 11 p.m. local time (20:00 GMT) due to strong winds.
More than 20 bodies were found on the coast of the towns of Shukra and Zinjibar on Sunday morning, while 12 survivors were taken to a hospital in the town of Shukra, he said, adding that dozens of migrants were still missing.
Security forces are carrying out a large-scale humanitarian operation to retrieve the bodies of a large number of illegal migrants of Ethiopian origin who drowned while trying to illegally enter Yemen from the Horn of Africa, the Abyan Governorate Security Directorate said. –0–
