Los Angeles, April 1 (Xinhua) — NASA's Artemis 2 lunar mission carrying four astronauts launched from Florida on Wednesday. The crewed spacecraft will orbit the moon for the first time in more than 50 years.

The Space Launch System rocket carrying the Orion spacecraft lifted off from Kennedy Space Center at 6:35 p.m. ET.

This is NASA's first crewed mission under the Artemis program. The crew includes American astronauts Reed Weisman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, as well as Canadian Jeremy Hansen.

Artemis 2 will demonstrate a wide range of capabilities necessary for deep-space missions. It is aimed at testing the Orion spacecraft's life support systems and will allow astronauts to practice operations critical to the success of Artemis 3 and subsequent lunar missions, NASA announced.
