UN, April 1 /Xinhua/ — Reform of the UN mandate system should be aimed at achieving tangible results and avoiding formalism, bureaucracy, and past mistakes such as the creation of redundant and duplicative structures, Sun Lei, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, said on Tuesday.
"China supports the UN in reforming and renewing itself, in its efforts to keep pace with the times and better fulfill the mandates entrusted to it by member states," the diplomat said.
Sun Lei emphasized that the reform must be consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, effectively guarantee the leadership and equal participation of all Member States, and promote the three main areas of the organization's activities in a balanced manner.
China will work with all countries and the UN Secretariat to play a constructive role in supporting the long-term development of the UN and reforming and improving global governance, he said.
As a reminder, the UN General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a historic resolution aimed at strengthening how UN mandates are formed, implemented, and reviewed. –0–
