Cairo, March 29 (Xinhua) — Arab foreign ministers have recommended supporting Egypt's nomination of former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy for the post of Secretary-General of the Arab League (LAS). The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced this in a statement on Sunday.

The corresponding decision was made during the 165th ordinary session of the Arab League Council at the level of foreign ministers, which was held via videoconference and dedicated to discussing current events in the region.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the recommendation will be presented at the upcoming Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia.

If appointed, N. Fahmy will take over as Arab League Secretary General for five years, effective July 1, and will replace veteran diplomat Ahmed Abu al-Gheit, who has led the Arab League since 2016.

N. Fahmy, who served as Egypt's Foreign Minister from 2013 to 2014, is considered one of the country's leading diplomats with extensive experience in diplomatic work and international relations. –0–
