BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) — Zhai Shichen, spokesperson for the People's Liberation Army's Southern Zone Combat Command (SZCC), on Friday called on the Philippines to strictly control the activities of its navy and air force and immediately stop provocative and risky actions and slanderous propaganda.
On March 25, PLA Navy ship 532 was conducting a routine patrol in waters under Chinese jurisdiction near Zhubi Reef in the Nansha Islands, he said.
He said that after spotting the Philippine Navy ship, the Chinese ship established radio contact to warn the Philippine vessel.
Despite repeated radio reminders from China, Philippine ship 507, located on the port side of PLA Navy ship 532, adjusted its course to starboard and then deliberately turned in the same direction, coming dangerously close to the Chinese ship and disrupting its navigation. Zhai Shichen stated that the Philippine Navy vessel's actions were unsafe and unprofessional, which could easily have led to a maritime incident. "What's worse, the Philippine side, shifting blame, falsely accused the Chinese ship of 'dangerous approach,'" he said.
