Dhaka, March 26 (Xinhua) — A bus carrying approximately 40 passengers plunged into the Padma River in Bangladesh's Rajbari district, located 125 kilometers south of Dhaka. At least 18 bodies have been recovered so far.

According to the fire department, the accident occurred around 5:15 PM local time. The passenger bus, heading to Dhaka, lost control, capsized, and sank in approximately 24 meters of water.

Rajbari District Deputy Commissioner and Magistrate Sultana Akhtar told Xinhua that there were approximately 40 passengers on the bus. "The bodies of 18 people, including 10 women and two children, have been recovered so far," she said.

Officials initially said two bodies were recovered. They later reported that the salvage vessel Hamza raised the sunken bus at 11:50 p.m. local time on Wednesday, recovering 16 more bodies.

Eyewitnesses told local television channels that only 10-11 passengers managed to swim to shore.

The search and rescue operation continues. Officials fear the death toll could rise. –0–
