NAIROBI, March 25 (Xinhua) — Chinese Vice President Han Zheng attended the China-Kenya Business Forum in Nairobi on March 23, where he reiterated China's commitment to expanding trade with Kenya and Africa.
As Han Zheng recalled, in April last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kenyan President William Ruto agreed to upgrade their bilateral relations to a China-Kenya community of shared future in a new era, which determined the direction of long-term development of relations between the two countries.
The Chinese Vice President put forward three proposals to strengthen China-Kenya relations.
First, Han Zheng stated, it is necessary to strengthen strategic mutual trust. China is ready to strengthen alignment with Kenya's development strategy, Vision 2030, and to support African countries, including Kenya, in transforming their resource advantages into development advantages to jointly advance modernization.
Secondly, Han Zheng continued, mutually beneficial cooperation must be deepened. China is Kenya's top trading partner and its largest source of foreign investment, while Kenya is China's largest trading partner in East Africa. China is willing to expand cooperation in areas such as agricultural technology, the digital economy, and green energy, and encourages more strong Chinese enterprises to invest and operate in Kenya.
Third, Han Zheng added, multilateralism should be supported. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that, starting May 1, China will implement a zero-tariff policy on 100 percent of goods from 53 African countries with diplomatic relations. China stands ready to work with African countries, including Kenya, to uphold the multilateral trading system and foster an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory environment for international economic cooperation.
According to the Vice President of China, the recently concluded "two sessions" in China approved the main provisions of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), which outline the country's development program for the next five years. Han Zheng noted that China will continue to uphold its commitment to high-level opening-up and will share opportunities with all countries, including Kenya, in its open development process and work together to achieve success.
Before the event, Han Zheng held talks with Kenyan Vice President Kithura Kindiki. He emphasized China's support for Kenya in pursuing a development path suited to its national circumstances and welcomed Kenya's use of trade facilitation measures to increase exports of high-quality and specialized products to China and exploit the vast opportunities of the vast Chinese market.
China is a reliable partner and friend of Kenya, noted K. Kindiki, emphasizing that through the Belt and Road Initiative, China is promoting regional connectivity and providing Kenya with significant development opportunities.
The Kenyan side is ready to take full advantage of the zero-tariff policy to expand exports to China, stimulate balanced trade, intensify technological exchanges, and become a gateway for China to the vast African market, K. Kindiki added. –0–
