Tashkent, March 24 (Xinhua) — The World Bank (WB) has approved a $200 million project to develop the transport sector in Uzbekistan's Surkhandarya region, the organization announced on Monday.
The project is scheduled to last five years. A key component will be the reconstruction of a 91-kilometer section of the M41 highway, connecting Uzbekistan with neighboring countries. The road is planned to be widened from two to four lanes. The road surface will also be modernized, and safety and accessibility of the infrastructure will be improved.
Once completed, the road is expected to be used by approximately 35,000 drivers and passengers daily. The highway will also provide greater access to transportation services and economic opportunities, including business development and new jobs, for approximately 550,000 residents of the surrounding areas.
In addition, the allocated funds will be used for the modernization, construction, and repair of 180 bridges. Plans also include upgrading the drainage system.
The World Bank notes that Uzbekistan's transport sector, which accounts for nearly 8 percent of the country's GDP and employs approximately 1 million people, has significantly improved its performance over the past ten years. –0–
