Boao, Hainan Province, March 24 (Xinhua) — Digital transformation has become a new driver of sustainable development in Asia, according to a report released on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia (BOA) on Tuesday.

Asia has taken the initiative to explore future-oriented development models using digital technologies, aiming to transform its diverse economic structures into overall regional competitiveness and resilience, according to the report titled “Sustainable Development: Asia and the World Annual Report 2026 – Asia’s Sustainable Development in a Global Transformation.”

The digital economy has become a key driver of economic growth in Asia, according to the report, which cites figures showing that Asia's digital economy will reach US$27 trillion in 2025, accounting for 46 percent of the region's GDP.

In particular, according to the report, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an important factor in social progress and economic growth throughout Asia.

The widespread promotion and cross-sector adoption of AI applications in the Asia-Pacific region, among other things, is changing the productivity structure, increasing the productivity of small and medium enterprises, stimulating job growth, and strengthening societal resilience in the public service sector.

Moreover, the report also highlights another trend in Asia's sustainable development, driven by digital sustainability, noting that green digital technologies are leading to low-carbon transformations.

Green manufacturing, enabled by digitalization, and smart factories have become the backbone of industrial modernization in the Asia-Pacific region, contributing to improved energy efficiency and sustainable growth, the report says.

Established in 2001, the Boao Forum for Asia is a non-governmental and non-profit international organization dedicated to promoting regional economic integration and supporting Asian countries in achieving their development goals.

This year, the BAF annual meeting is being held from March 24 to 27 under the theme "Shaping a Common Future: New Dynamics, New Opportunities, New Cooperation." -0-
