Moscow, March 24 /Xinhua/ — The current situation in the world's oceans, characterized by illegal actions by Western countries, is absolutely unacceptable, according to a statement published Monday on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website.
"The situation developing in the world's oceans recently is becoming completely unacceptable. European countries like France, Sweden, and Finland are stopping and escorting unwanted vessels to their ports with impunity, accusing them of violating some kind of 'international' sanctions," the statement reads.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that the European countries' pretext is the need to comply with the EU's illegal restrictions. To achieve the goal of depriving Russia of income from international trade, the EU invented the term "shadow fleet," which does not exist in international maritime law and is used as cover for robberies on sea lanes.
The statement states that only those sanctions approved by the UN Security Council are international. Unilateral, unlawful restrictions adopted by individual states or limited associations of states are neither international nor legitimate. The inconsistency of unilateral sanctions with international law has been repeatedly confirmed by UN General Assembly resolutions.
“Those who aim to turn the Baltic Sea, as well as other waters, into ‘internal waters’ of NATO and the EU must understand that incidents of robbery and lawlessness will not go unanswered by us, using all necessary means,” the Russian Foreign Ministry warned.
