BEIJING, March 21 (Xinhua) — Chinese authorities have strengthened regulations on content labeling on short video platforms, aiming to resolve inconsistencies in labeling standards and curb the spread of unlabeled fictional, staged, and artificial intelligence-generated content, the Office of the Central Cyberspace Commission said.

The agency has instructed platform operators to implement standardized labeling methods. Over the past month, six major short video platforms have removed over 37,000 short videos containing staged scenes and other violations, taken action against over 3,400 violating accounts, and added labels to over 600,000 short videos.

According to the Chancellery's announcement, platforms have been instructed to standardize short video content labeling categories and make labeling a mandatory step in the publishing process. Users are now required to indicate the category of the content they upload. Furthermore, platforms must add markers to previously published materials to ensure that all relevant videos are properly labeled.

The Chancellery will further define specific requirements and a work schedule to ensure a unified rollout of standardized short video content labeling measures nationwide, while simultaneously conducting audits and collecting evidence. Platforms and accounts that fail to comply with labeling requirements or fulfill their obligations will be severely punished and publicly exposed, the agency stated. -0-
