Moscow, March 21 /Xinhua/ – The reckless strike on the port of Bandar Anzali in the Caspian Sea threatens to draw Caspian countries into the conflict over Iran, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated on Friday.
"The Caspian Sea region has always been perceived by the countries of the region and the international community as a safe space for peace and cooperation. The reckless and irresponsible actions of the aggressors pose a threat of drawing the Caspian states into a military conflict," the diplomat's statement is quoted on the department's website.
According to her, the economic interests of Russia and other Caspian states that maintain transport links with Iran through this port are affected.
M. Zakharova called for an immediate cessation of military action and a resumption of efforts to achieve a political settlement of the situation in the Middle East, which is increasingly being projected onto neighboring regions. –0–
