Beijing, March 19 (Xinhua) — China calls on Japan to reconsider its position, correct its mistakes, and change course, avoiding further down the wrong path, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Thursday.

Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular press briefing, commenting on a report published by the US intelligence community. The document documents a "significant shift" in Japan's position on Taiwan, while Japanese authorities themselves state that Japan's definition of an "existential threat" remains unchanged.

Lin Jian stated that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous statements on the Taiwan issue constitute flagrant interference in China's internal affairs, demonstrate a malicious intent to intervene militarily on the Taiwan issue, and constitute a threat to use force against China. China has repeatedly clarified its strict position on this matter, the Chinese diplomat added.

According to Lin Jian, the report shows that the international community is increasingly aware of the harmful nature and destructive impact of Sanae Takaichi's remarks and is vigilant against Japan's dangerous trend of provocative and destabilizing actions.

He pointed out that simply by declaring that “the position has not changed,” Japan finds it difficult to explain its actions and is unable to win the trust of neighboring Asian countries and the international community.

“We call on the Japanese side to reconsider its position and correct its mistakes, change course, practically implement the four Sino-Japanese political documents and its own commitments, strictly abide by the pacifist provisions of the Japanese Constitution, and avoid further following the wrong path,” Lin Jian concluded. –0–
