Paris, March 16 (Xinhua) — From March 15 to 16, negotiating teams from China and the United States held frank, in-depth, and constructive consultations in Paris, reaching preliminary consensus on several topics. The two sides will continue their consultations in the next phase, China's representative in international trade negotiations and Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang announced in Paris on Monday.

As Li Chenggang noted at a briefing following the new round of China-US trade and economic consultations, topics discussed included the levels of bilateral customs duties under the new conditions and the possible extension of existing agreements on bilateral duties and related non-tariff measures.

The American side informed the other side about the adjustments to its new tariff measures and shared its considerations regarding its next steps, while the Chinese side expressed concern about the uncertainty caused by these measures. The two sides agreed to work together to maintain stability in bilateral trade and economic relations and discussed the idea of establishing a working mechanism to promote bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

Li Chenggang said that the Chinese side made strong representations and expressed serious concerns during the consultations regarding the US restrictive measures on trade and investment related to China, in particular due to the recent initiation by the United States of two investigations related to China under Section 301 of the US Trade Act.

"We oppose this type of unilateral investigation. We express concern about the disruption and damage that the potential results of these investigations could cause to the stable, hard-won China-US trade and economic relations," the Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce emphasized.

Li Chenggang indicated that the Chinese side will closely monitor the progress of these investigations and take timely measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests.

He expressed hope that the American side will cherish trust, fulfill its promises and move towards the Chinese side, jointly promoting the sustainable and long-term development of Chinese-American trade and economic relations.

During the current consultations, China and the United States reaffirmed that stable trade and economic ties benefit both countries and the world as a whole, Li Chenggang added. –0–
