Beijing, March 16 (Xinhua) — China hopes that Afghanistan and Pakistan will maintain composure and exercise restraint, establish direct contact as soon as possible, agree to a ceasefire as soon as possible, and resolve their differences and disagreements through dialogue, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on Monday.

Lin Jian made the statement in response to a question about China's shuttle diplomacy in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which recently erupted in military conflict.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are and always will be neighbors, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson emphasized, adding that issues between the two countries can only be resolved through dialogue and consultation. He stated that the current priority is preventing escalation and returning to the negotiating table as soon as possible.

According to a Chinese diplomat, in the past few days, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate telephone conversations with Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.

Lin Jian also pointed out that the Chinese Foreign Ministry's special envoy for Afghan affairs has been making shuttle trips between Afghanistan and Pakistan for mediation purposes, and that the Chinese embassies in Pakistan and Afghanistan are in close communication with both sides.

Both countries highly appreciate China's active mediation efforts, Lin Jian stated.

"The Chinese side hopes that the two sides will maintain composure and exercise restraint, enter into direct contact as soon as possible, agree on a ceasefire as soon as possible, and resolve contradictions and differences through dialogue," the Chinese Foreign Ministry official concluded, emphasizing that China will continue to make active efforts to promote reconciliation and ease tensions between the two sides.
