JERUSALEM, March 16 (Xinhua) — The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Monday it has launched a "limited and targeted ground operation" against key Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the operation, saying it was aimed at "eliminating threats and protecting residents of the northern part of the Jewish state."

Security sources and eyewitnesses reported violent clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters at several points along the border. Israeli forces are advancing toward the Blue Line (the UN-established border between Israel and Lebanon), taking up positions in populated areas and strategic points throughout the border area.
