Moscow, March 16 (Xinhua) — The United States and Israel already understand how mistaken they were in counting on a quick operation against Iran. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated this on Monday at a press conference following talks with Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi.
"If they expected to achieve the goal of completely subjugating this state in a day, in a few hours, then they probably already understand how wrong they were, how deluded they were," TASS quotes the Russian minister as saying.
The Russian Foreign Minister noted that the US and Israeli aggression against Iran was completely "unprovoked, and it could not go unanswered." "And, of course, Iran is defending itself," he emphasized.
S. Lavrov pointed out that the conflict's consequences have extended beyond the Middle East. "But the consequences—you see, I started directly with the situation around Iran—are much broader. And they are no longer regional; they have a global reach," he added.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry reiterated Moscow's readiness to play a mediating role in a political settlement in the Middle East. "I emphasize once again that we, along with other like-minded countries, advocate and will continue to advocate for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the search for a political settlement. We are ready, as President [of Russia Vladimir] Putin has repeatedly stated, to play a mediating role in this political process if such a role is needed. We believe we have such capabilities," concluded S. Lavrov.
