Cairo, March 15 (Xinhua) — The Strait of Hormuz, a key international oil shipping route, remains open but under Iranian control, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy Commander Alireza Tangsiri said on Saturday.

US claims of destroying the Iranian Navy or providing safe escort for oil tankers are false, Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported, citing A. Tangsiri.

According to the Iranian military leader, the Strait of Hormuz was not militarily blocked, but was simply under control.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi backed the statement, telling US media that the strait remains open to international shipping except for vessels belonging to the US, Israel and their allies.

"The Strait of Hormuz is open; it's closed only to tankers and ships belonging to our enemies—those who attack us and their allies. Everyone else can pass," said A. Araghchi.
