BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) — The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has established four national key laboratories in traditional Chinese medicine, microelectronics, smart city internet of things, and selenology and planetology, Chen Jimin, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and vice chairperson of the Macao University of Science and Technology, said on Wednesday.
Relying on universities and key national laboratories, and participating in major national projects, Macao has trained numerous young scientists and attracted an increasing number of world-renowned scientists to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Chen Jimin said on the sidelines of the 4th Session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee.
Since its return to the motherland in 1999, the Macao SAR has paid special attention to scientific research and scientific and technological innovation in higher education, she noted.
According to her, during this period, the number of students studying at universities in the Macao SAR increased from 8,000 to over 62,000, while the number of research staff at local universities increased 137-fold, from 13 to 1,773. Of these, over 9,000 are undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students studying in scientific and technical fields.
"Macao is becoming an international hub for highly skilled talent, bringing together minds from all over the world and linking Chinese and international collaborative innovation," she added. -0-
