Almaty, March 10 (Xinhua) — The volume of cargo transported along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TCITR) has increased fivefold over the past seven years, from 0.8 million to 4.5 million tons per year, the Kazakh Ministry of Transport reported on Tuesday.
According to the agency, container shipping is growing particularly rapidly: by the end of 2025, approximately 77,000 TEU (twenty-foot container equivalent) of various cargoes were transported along the route, and 300,000 TEU are planned to be transported by 2029.
The growth in transportation is due to infrastructure development, simplified customs procedures, and a reduction in cargo delivery times along the route from 28-32 to 13-17 days.
As part of the TITR development, port and railway infrastructure is being modernized. Specifically, dredging of the Kuryk port has been completed, and similar work is planned for the Aktau port in 2026.
The Trans-Caucasian Transport Route (TMTR) connects China, Kazakhstan, the Caucasus countries, Turkey and European markets and is considered one of the key transport corridors between Asia and Europe.
