ANKARA, March 9 (Xinhua) — The United States on Monday suspended consular services at its consulate in southern Turkey and ordered the departure of non-critical government personnel and their families out of concern for the safety of the United States.
“For President /US Donald/ Trump, Secretary of State /Mark/ Rubio and the entire State Department, there is no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens,” the US Embassy in Turkey said in a statement published on the X social media platform on Monday.
The United States Department of State ordered the departure of non-essential U.S. government personnel and their families assigned to the U.S. Consulate General in Adana “out of an abundance of caution” due to security risks, the statement said.
Tensions in the region escalated following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which began on February 28. Iran responded with several series of missile and drone strikes against Israeli and US targets across the Middle East.
