Ankara, March 9 (Xinhua) – Fourteen people were killed after a boat carrying migrants collided with a Turkish coast guard vessel off the coast of Beymelek in Turkey's Antalya province, local authorities reported on Monday.
"The boat, which attempted to escape without heeding the coast guard's warning, collided with the coast guard vessel due to its high-speed maneuvers, causing some migrants to fall into the water," said provincial governor Hulusi Sahin.
He said the incident occurred around 06:00 local time /03:00 GMT/ when a boat carrying illegal migrants from Africa, including women and children, was discovered off the coast of Beymelek.
Seven migrants who fell into the water were rescued by coast guard units, and ambulance crews provided assistance, noted H. Sahin, adding that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
The prosecutor's office has launched a judicial investigation, and the Antalya governor's office has also initiated an administrative investigation into the incident, the governor added. –0–
