TEHRAN, March 9 (Xinhua) — Iran's military said Sunday that 104 people were killed and 32 others wounded in a United States attack on the Iranian navy frigate Dena in international waters.
In a statement on its website, the Iranian Armed Forces condemned the "inhumane" attack, calling it a "cowardly" and "cruel" attack by the US Navy. The frigate, carrying 136 crew members, was returning from the 2026 International Fleet Review and the Milan exercises when it was struck.
The Iranian military claimed that the United States attacked a vessel without warning on Wednesday, hundreds of miles from the conflict zone, violating international humanitarian and maritime law. The frigate was torpedoed and sunk by the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Charlotte in the Indian Ocean.
The incident occurred after joint Israeli-US strikes on Tehran and other Iranian cities on February 28, which killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, several members of his family, senior military commanders, and civilians. Iran responded with multiple missile and drone strikes against Israel and US bases in the Middle East.
