Beijing, March 8 (Xinhua) — Peace, cooperation, and friendship should become the new narrative in the South China Sea region, and any provocations and manipulations are futile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Sunday.

The South China Sea is the busiest, safest, and most free-roaming maritime area in the world. Cooperation in the South China Sea has maintained a dynamic trend over the past year, Wang Yi noted at a press conference during the ongoing Fourth Session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC).

“While we continue to effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, the negotiation process for the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea has already entered a key phase,” Wang Yi said, noting that all interested parties expect it to be completed this year.

“We also hope that as the ASEAN Chair this year, the Philippines will recognize its responsibilities, resist the temptation of selfish interests, demonstrate a sense of duty, and play a positive role in ensuring peace and stability in the region,” Wang Yi concluded. -0-
