BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhua) — The friendship between China and Africa has withstood the test of international turbulence, demonstrating strong resilience, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Sunday.
For the 36th consecutive year, China's Foreign Minister has begun his yearly overseas visit with a visit to Africa. Despite the turbulent international situation, this good tradition has remained unbroken and has become the spirit and foundation of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi noted at a press conference during the Fourth Session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing.
"It can be said that China-Africa friendship is nourished by the souls and hearts of people of different generations, becoming the quintessence of their hard work," Wang Yi said.
Noting new steps in building a China-Africa community with a shared future, Wang Yi said that China will host leaders from a number of African countries this year, strengthening mutual support between the all-weather partners and opening new chapters in the annals of shared destiny.
Starting May 1 of this year, China will introduce zero tariffs on 100 percent of imported goods from African countries. "We will use tariff subtraction to promote trade 'addition' and 'multiplication' of people's well-being, opening up new opportunities for Africa from China's vast market," Wang Yi stated.
The year of China-Africa people-to-people and cultural exchanges has officially begun, with nearly 600 events scheduled to be held this year, he said, adding that China is willing to work together with the brotherly African people to deepen mutual enrichment between different civilizations, enhance mutual understanding between peoples, and ensure that China-Africa friendship is passed down from generation to generation. -0-
