Washington, March 6 (Xinhua) — US President Donald Trump said he wants to be personally involved in selecting Iran's new supreme leader, the American news outlet Axios reported on Thursday.
In a phone interview with Axios, Trump called the candidacy of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, "unacceptable."
"I must participate in the appointment," he said. "A. Khamenei's son is unacceptable to me."
D. Trump also warned that if Iran elects a leader who “continues the policies of A. Khamenei,” the United States will be forced to return to war “within five years.”
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi previously told media that following the death of A. Khamenei as a result of recent US-Israeli strikes, Iran has created a three-member interim leadership council that will handle state affairs until a new supreme leader is elected.
Iran has identified several candidates for the post of Supreme Leader, state-run IRIB TV reported on Wednesday. A selection will be made soon.
