This year, 130 more pedestrian crossing islands will appear in the capital to make crossing the road safer for pedestrians. They are being added near public transport stops, schools, hospitals, and parks. The projects were developed by road curators in Traffic Management Center.
"We continue to do everything we can to reduce accidents in the capital, as instructed by Sergei Sobyanin and part of the transport development strategy through 2030. Over the past five years, approximately 900 safety islands have been installed near social facilities and public places of interest, based on plans from the Center for Traffic Management's road supervisors. This year, approximately 130 more will be added. Thanks to these changes, traveling around the city has become safer for both pedestrians and drivers," noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Specifically, new markings will appear on pedestrian crossings in northeast Moscow—on Dekabristov Street, near Building 10, Bldg. 2. Currently, this section has one lane in each direction, and the road is quite wide. The new safety island will allow pedestrians to safely complete the crossing in two stages, waiting for traffic to pass and ensuring drivers yield to them. A safety island will also appear in the north—on General Ivashutina Street, near Building 80 on Khoroshevskoye Shosse. It will be installed here for the same reason. In the west—on Ramenki Street, near Building 19, Bldg. 1—a new pedestrian crossing with a safety island will appear next to the Ramenki Sports Complex. This will make crossing the road there more convenient and safer.
Safety islands are essential for separating traffic from pedestrians, reducing the risk of accidents, and making travel more comfortable for residents. They allow pedestrians to safely stop mid-crossing and then continue on their way, ensuring that drivers yield.
City traffic management is a comprehensive effort aimed at creating comfortable and safe travel conditions, always prioritizing residents' opinions, convenience, and road safety. Effective engagement with residents helps to improve the traffic situation in various districts of the capital. Each year, the Center for Traffic Management (TsODD) curators develop over a thousand projects, and about a third of these are initiated by residents themselves.
